Patch

On Wednesday, December 3, 2008 around 1:00 a.m., Waterloo Police officers and Waterloo Fire Rescue firefighters responded to a crash involving a van and a semi tractor/trailer at the intersection of Ansborough Avenue and Sergeant Road (U.S. Highway 63).  When officers arrived on scene they found the van had rear ended the semi trailer, was wedged underneath of it and was on fire.  Officers, using fire extinguishers, worked to contain the flames until firefighters were able to completely extinguish the fire.  It took firefighters and paramedics about an hour to free the driver from the van.

The driver of the van, identified as 33-year-old Michal McBride of Hartford, Iowa, was delivering newspapers for the Des Moines Register at the time of the crash.  McBride was transported to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo and then airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where he remains hospitalized in critical condition with burns to the lower part of his body.

The driver of the semi tractor/trailer, identified as 39-year-old Robert Andrews of Bellevue, Nebraska, was treated and released from Covenant Medical Center for neck and back pain.

The investigation into this crash continues.
