Patch

On Sunday, October 11, 2009 around 1:30 am, Waterloo Police officers responded to the intersection of University Avenue and Sergeant Road on the report of a personal injury, two-vehicle crash.

When officers arrived they learned that the driver of one of the vehicles, later identified as 37-year-old Jeffery Alan Heidemann of Waterloo, left the scene on foot.  The other driver, later identified as 18-year-old Karlee Margaret Nagel of Waterloo, was extricated from her vehicle by Waterloo Fire Rescue personnel and transported to Allen Hospital.  Later that morning Nagel died as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash.

Shortly after 2 am that morning officers located Heidemann at a residence on Sunnyside Avenue in Waterloo and wound up charging him with 1st offense OWI, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, no drivers license and no proof of insurance.  Heidemann has since been released from the Black Hawk County Jail.

The preliminary investigation shows that Nagel was driving eastbound on University Avenue and Heidemann was traveling southbound on Sergeant Road when the vehicles collided in the intersection.

This is an ongoing investigation and no more information will be released at this time.
