Wednesday, 16 December 2009 16:02

From November 25, 2009 through December 15, 2009 Waterloo Police officers conducted tobacco compliance checks of Waterloo businesses that hold tobacco sales permits.  Eighty-five businesses were checked and of those, 10 persons were cited for selling tobacco products to an underage person.  This translates to an 88% compliance rating.

Those persons cited for selling tobacco to a minor and the businesses where the violation occurred are as follows:

Seth Feuchtwanger, age 21, Walgreen Drug Store 3910 University Avenue
Lisa Casey, age 41, Metro Mart 2332 Falls Avenue
Jared Juel, age 19, Metro Mart 3201 West 4th Street
Shaista Yasmeen, age 44, Save More Foods 1975 Franklin Street
Reid Slaughter, age 18, Kimball Avenue Drug 2104 Kimball Avenue
Patricia Kidrowski, age 53, Kum & Go 1976 Franklin Street
Larry Neisen, age 49, Cork's Grocery 1956 Lafayette Street
Melissa Williamson, age 35, All Stop Convenience 51 East Tower Park Drive
Eddie Helm, age 44, Elite Liquor 1309 Lafayette Street
Rachel Sanders, age 19, CVS Pharmacy 2068 Logan Avenue

The fine for this violation, a simple misdemeanor, is $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second offense and $500 for the third offense.  The business is also subject to a civil penalty.

The Waterloo Police Department participates in the "Iowa Pledge Tobacco Enforcement Project," which is administered by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.  Officers will start the next round of compliance checks within the next several weeks.
