2009 Officer of the Year
Each year the Waterloo Exchange Club shows their appreciation to the law enforcement community by sponsoring an “Officer of the Year” award which is presented to a police officer who has demonstrated the virtue of dedication to his or her department, community and the citizens he or she serves. Investigator Jeff Tyler was nominated by his peers and supervisors and was selected by Interim Chief John Beckman as the 2009 Waterloo Police Officer of the Year.

Investigator Tyler joined the Waterloo Police Department in July 1999.  He began his career with the department as a patrol officer where he remained until 2004 when he was assigned to the Investigations division.  He has also worked as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) while in the Patrol division and was a member of the bike patrol. 

Jeff is a Waterloo native and a West High graduate.  He is also a graduate from Hawkeye Community College's Police Science program in 1996, the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 1998, and also Upper Iowa University with a BA in Public Administration in 1998.

Jeff's supervisors and peers describe him as diligent, consistent, an energetic informal leader, and an excellent interviewer and interrogator.  They acknowledge his willingness to sacrifice events in his personal life in order to answer that call, regardless of whether it's day or night, and respond to crime scenes.  Jeff handles one of the most difficult caseloads in the division, balancing both volume and severity. 

Jeff is a devoted family man to his wife and two daughters.  In his free time he enjoys spending time in Minnesota with his family and friends, while fishing and boating.
