On Wednesday, December 14, 2011, Robert Joseph Shannon was shot and killed while he sat in a vehicle at Popular Avenue and Whittier Avenue. Shannon died of a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

On Thursday, December 15, 2011, Waterloo Police arrested Montez Tyrone Caples, age 21, of 1119 Kern Street, Waterloo, IA. Caples has been charged with Murder in the First Degree. Bond has not been set.
