Officer Involved Shooting

On Monday, March 25, 2024, at approximately 2:47 PM Waterloo Police responded to a report of shots being fired at 2701 Falls Ave.  The investigation into this incident resulted in an officer involved shooting at 1204 Hartman Ave, with one male being declared deceased.  The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident.   The Officer has been placed on critical incident leave.

Remains Identified

Remains Identified

On Monday March 4, 2024, at approximately 12:17 PM Waterloo Police Officers were made aware of possible human remains located at the Waterloo Waste Treatment Plant located in at 2550 Kenyon Ave.  Waterloo Patrol Officers arrived and were directed into an area, where they were discovered.  Waterloo Police Detectives and Lab personnel were called into assist.  The remains were be taken to the Iowa Medical Examiner’s office for identification and a cause of death.  The Iowa Medical Examiners Office has positively identified the remains as 52 yrs. old Darrin Lenton, who was reported missing on July 10, 2021. Robbery Arrest

Robbery Arrest

Over the course of the last month the Waterloo Police Department has been investigating several pizza delivery robberies throughout the city.  As a result of this investigation, Waterloo Police Detectives have charged 19 yrs. old Daqualis Spates-Ketchens of Waterloo with two counts of Robbery 1st, two counts of Theft 5th, and one count of Burglary 2nd.  Investigation is ongoing.

A Criminal Charge/Warrant is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Weapons Violation

Weapons Violation 

On Tuesday February 13, 2024, at approximately 10:01 PM, Waterloo Patrol Officers were dispatched to 3623 Ravenwood Circle on a report of some type of disorderly. Consolidated Dispatch had taken a report of a male acting erratic by banging on neighbor’s doors and carrying a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers observed a male suspect with the handgun in the hallway of the apartment complex.  Officers ordered the male to drop the gun, but he retreated into apartment #3.   The Waterloo Police Tactical Team and Negotiators were called into assist.  After several hours, the male exited the apartment and was taken into custody.  The male has been identified as 38 yrs. old Jacob Van Riper.  Van Riper has been charged with Interference with a Firearm, Public Into, Carrying Weapon while Intoxicated, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Marijuana W/Intent, Drug Tax Stamp Violation, and Ineligible Person Carrying a Firearm.  Investigation is ongoing.
