			<title>Yield To Emergency Vehicles</title>
			<link>http://www.waterloopolice.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=717&amp;Itemid=187</link>
<description>The Waterloo Police Department wants to pass on some reminders to the motoring public about what they are required to do when an emergency vehicle approaches them with it’s emergency lights, or it’s emergency lights and siren activated.  Emergency vehicles include law enforcement, fire and ambulances.
Drivers shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to, the right-hand edge or curb of the street or highway, clear of any intersection, and shall stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, or when directed to move by a law enforcement officer.  Violators are subject to a citation and a fine of $195.00.
The motoring public is also reminded about Iowa’s “move over” law, which requires drivers to use due caution and move into the next lane of traffic when approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle that is displaying flashing yellow, amber, white, red, or red and blue lights.  Emergency vehicles for this purpose not only include law enforcement, fire and ambulances, but also tow trucks, highway maintenance vehicles, utility vehicles and city/county maintenance vehicles.  Violators are subject to a citation and a fine of $195.00
Recently, law enforcement officers, as well as firefighters and paramedics, have noticed an increase in these types of violations.  The intent is to remind the motoring public of these requirements not only for their well-being, but also for the well-being of all public safety personnel.

			<title>Increased Traffic Enforcement</title>
			<link>http://www.waterloopolice.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=715&amp;Itemid=187</link>
			<description>Increased Traffic Enforcement:

Together with agencies across the state and across the nation, the Waterloo Police Department will join the “Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest” enforcement effort as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiative and the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). This project will be conducted August 24 – September 6, 2010. There will be increased traffic enforcement with an emphasis on safety belt usage and OWI enforcement.
The police department would like to remind you of the following tips:

Don’t risk it -- If you plan to drive, don’t drink or use any drugs.
Choose a sober designated driver before celebrating.
Take mass transit, a taxicab or ask a friend to drive you home.
Spend the night where the activity is being held.
Report impaired drivers to law enforcement.
Always wear your safety belt.

<title>Drive Safely: Students going back to school</title>
			<link>http://www.waterloopolice.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=714&amp;Itemid=187</link>
<description>The Waterloo Police Department is reminding the motoring public to be extra alert this time of year as school will soon be back in session.  The Cedar Valley Catholic Elementary Schools and the Waterloo Community School District Elementary Schools will begin classes on Thursday, August 19, 2010.
It is an exciting time of year for children, especially children who will be attending school for the first time.  Unfortunately, it also means that young, inexperienced children are in the traffic mix, where they are more at risk to be struck by vehicles.
Motorists can help reduce the risk to children going to and from school by:
*Slowing down in school and residential areas
*Watching for clues that give warning of children in the area (bicycles, crossing guards, school buses)
*Obeying school bus stop laws
*Clearing fogged windows before driving
*Obeying all traffic signs/signals
*Avoiding school zones during arrival and dismissal hours
Each year, from across the Country, vehicles strike thousands of children.  The Waterloo Police Department suggests that all parents instruct their children in safe crossing practices before the opening of school, including walking the route with your children.
Instruct children on how to judge if there is adequate time to cross a street and never enter the roadway from between parked cars.  When there is no sidewalk and it is necessary to walk on the roadway, walk on the far left side, facing traffic.  Whenever possible use crosswalks and designated school crossings.
Drivers should be aware of the school bus stopping laws.  When meeting or following a school bus with flashing amber lights, drivers shall reduce their speed to 25 mph and shall bring their vehicle to a complete stop when the school bus stops and the stop arm is extended.  The vehicle shall remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted.
The driver of a vehicle on a highway that provides two or more lanes in each direction need not stop upon meeting a school bus, which is traveling in the opposite direction, even though the bus is stopped.  The driver of a vehicle overtaking a school bus shall not pass a school bus when red or amber warning signal lights are flashing.  The driver shall bring their vehicle to a complete stop no closer than fifteen feet from the school bus when the stop arm is extended, and shall remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted and the bus resumes motion.
Remember, some children, especially those going to school for the first time, may have never learned traffic safety.  Others may have forgotten over the summer.  Drivers need to be cautious around schools, bus stops and areas where children walk to school.

			<title>Tips To Prevent Car Burglaries</title>
			<link>http://www.waterloopolice.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=712&amp;Itemid=187</link>
<description>Within the past few weeks the Waterloo Police Department and other Cedar Valley area law enforcement agencies have investigated numerous car burglaries.  On Thursday, August 5, 2010, four persons were arrested who are responsible for a majority of these burglaries.  Other arrests are anticipated, as this is an ongoing investigation.  The Cedar Falls Police Department will issue a media release with additional information about the persons arrested.
Vehicle burglaries are one of the most preventable crimes.  The vehicle burglaries that are occurring in the Cedar Valley area are not necessarily happening in shopping mall parking lots or while people are parked at their place of business.  These crimes are occurring at night, in people's own driveways or on the street out front of their homes.  Following just a few steps can dramatically reduce your risk of being a victim.

If available, always park your vehicle in a locked garage.
Always lock the doors to your vehicle, even when you are away from the vehicle for a short time.
Remove all valuables from your vehicle. If you can't take personal property with you, lock items in the trunk. Do not place them under the seat. This includes your purse or wallet, CDs, books, cash, keys, cell phone, iPod, laptop, garage door opener, gym bag, briefcase, jewelry, tools, packages, etc. If a thief breaks into your vehicle and steals your garage door opener and keys, they have access to your home.
Do not leave ANY mail in your vehicle. These items have your name, address and possibly contain personal financial information.
Remove &quot;pull out&quot; style stereos and/or removable faceplates of stereos.
Park in well-lit areas. At home, park your vehicle near porch lights. If you cannot park in a garage, install motion detection lights, which will illuminate your driveway at night.
Set any alarm or anti-theft device that is installed on your vehicle.

Through a cooperative effort between the public and law enforcement, we can reduce these and other types of crimes.
