The Waterloo Police Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) statistics for 2012:

Weapons Seizures Total:  41   The VCAT unit is funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, COPPS program. The unit is in the 4th and final year of its grant.

  • 1 Assault Rifle
  • 3 Shotguns (unaltered)
  • 5 Rifles
  • 29 Handguns

Firearm Facts:

18 firearms recovered that were reported stolen

8 used in shootings

3 used in other crimes

20 suspects charged were gang related

Suspects Charged in Gun Crimes:

17 Felons in Possession of a Firearm

12 Trafficking Stolen Weapons

7 Robbery 1st Degree

5 Burglary 1st Degree

5 Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon

20 Carrying Weapons

2 Possession of an Offensive Weapon

3 Going Armed with Intent

1 Willful Injury

Federal Gun Cases: (11 Case Adopted in 2012)

 

  • 8 Indictments (3 set for Grand Jury January 2013)
  • 5 Plead out/found guilty
  • 3 Awaiting trial/Plea deals

Other Highlights:

 

  • Apprehended homicide suspect/gang member from Des Moines on Felony gun charges
  • Executed 8 firearm search warrants at residences
  • Apprehended 5 offenders on ten-year Oakdale Prison Mittimus/Warrants
  • Arrested 1 offender on a Federal gun warrant
  • Located 1 methamphetamine lab on traffic stop
