On November 1, 2016 at 10:36 A.M., Waterloo Police Department Officers responded to Rhey St. & Fowler St. on a report of gun shots. It was also reported that there was a victim on the ground behind 1803 Franklin St. Upon arrival the victim, Darrell Deshay Lanier, age 22, was located and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Lanier was transported to Unity Point Health, Allen Hospital by the Waterloo Fire Department and underwent emergency surgery for those injuries. Since that time he has been in the intensive care unit, listed in critical condition.

On the morning of November 4, 2016 Darrell Lanier, after multiple surgeries, died as a result of the internal injuries from the gunshot wounds. No additional information is being released at this time as this case remains under investigation.
