Director of Safety Services Daniel Trelka announces the Waterloo Police Department will begin the process of recruiting citizens who would be interested in joining the ranks of the Waterloo Police Department Reserve Unit. The unit is staffed by highly trained and certified volunteers that serve the Waterloo community.

Those persons who are interested must be a resident of Blackhawk County Iowa, be at least 21 years of age, possess a High School Diploma/G.E.D. and a valid Iowa Drivers License with no suspensions or revocations in the previous three (3) years, must be a United States Citizen, be able to speak and read the English language and have no criminal history.

Applicants must pass an application and interview process and complete a thorough background check. Those passing the background check are responsible for obtaining a physical examination at their own expense.

Recruit Reserve Officers will receive over 200 hours of local training as mandated by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and 160 hours of Field Training.

Once the process is complete the applicant will be sworn in as a Police Reserve Officer and possess police powers and authority while serving under the supervision of the Waterloo Police Department.

Informational meetings have been scheduled for July 26th 2011 at 7:00 p.m. and August 16th 2011 at 7:00 p.m., at the Waterloo Police Department Training Center at 348 North Elk Run Road. Those interested in applying are urged to attend one of these sessions.

Any person who meets the qualifications is welcome to apply. To do so, a Letter of Interest and Resume should be sent to Lieutenant Al Carrier (Reserve Unit Liaison) at the Waterloo Police Department, 715 Mulberry Street, Waterloo, Iowa 50703, no later than September 1st 2011 by 5:00 p.m..
