Officers Apprehend Suspect with a gun during foot pursuit

On Saturday November 26, 2011 Officers with the Waterloo Police Department's Violent Crimes Apprehension Team made contact with seventeen-year-old Walter Eugene Smith Jr. in the area of Center St. and Utica St. as part of an investigation.  Smith was observed smoking a cigarette and immediately fled from Officers when they attempted to stop him.  Smith was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.  During the investigation Officers recovered a .38 special revolver, which Smith had in his possession during the incident.  Smith was charged as an adult for possession of a firearm as a prohibited person and interference with official acts while in possession of a firearm, which are both class D felonies.  Smith was also charged with carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor.  Smith was booked at the Black Hawk County Jail and he is currently being held at the Juvenile Detention Center.
