Area Child Care Center Donates Money To Waterloo Police K-9 Unit

On Thursday, July 23, 2009, St. Edward's Early Childhood Center Co-Directors Susie Schaefer and Jolene Delorbe presented a check for three hundred and seventeen dollars to Waterloo Police Department Chief of Police Thomas Jennings that will be used to purchase ballistic vests for the Department's K-9s.  St. Edward's Early Childhood Center is a part of the Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.

Schaefer and Delorbe challenged the students in the Childhood Center to raise money for the vests and dubbed the project "Coins for K-9s."  Over a five-week period the students brought in loose change that wound up totaling three hundred and seventeen dollars.

Department K-9 handlers are in the process of selecting a vest that will provide proper fit and optimal protection for the K-9s.

The Waterloo Police Department's K-9 Unit receives a large portion of it's funding from the Guernsey Charitable Trust, but donations such as the "Coins for K-9s" project and similar fund raising efforts, help hold the cost for the K-9 Unit to a minimum.
