Patch

The Cedar Valley has over 100 miles of hard-surfaced, multi use trails. When using these trails, the Waterloo Police Department offers these trail safety tips:

Know your route and pay attention to your surroundings

If possible, run or bike with a friend. If you choose to go alone, let someone know when you leave, what your route will be, and what time you expect to return.

Carry a cell phone with you.  Along our trails, there are Trail Emergency Access System (TEAS) signs mounted on benches, sign posts, restrooms and shelters all within close proximity to the trail. Each sign contains a simple ID number indicating to Public Safety Officials the location on the trail.

Carrying a weapon like pepper spray or mace is a personal decision. If you do carry something, never use it to threaten someone. It should be used to divert the attention of the attacker and provide a means of escape.
