Arrest Made in Gable Street Shots Fired Investigation

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, at approximately 7:55 a.m., Waterloo Police were dispatched to the area of North Barclay Street and Gable Street following reports of multiple gunshots. Residents in the neighborhood reported hearing between 10 and 12 shots. Upon arrival, officers located damage to the front of a residence at 630 Gable Street consistent with gunfire. The occupants were home at the time, but no injuries were reported. Evidence was collected and the investigation remained ongoing.

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Waterloo Police Department’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) continued investigative efforts related to the incident. As a result, VCAT Detectives arrested 19‑year‑old Najier Qaliq Burkett of Waterloo. Burkett has been charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, a Class C Felony. He is currently being held at the Black Hawk County Jail.

The Waterloo Police Department reminds the public that a criminal charge is merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
